Sunlite’s patented, Application-Specific LEDs (AS-LEDs) have a non-traditional patented design made specifically for Sunlite lighting products. Most LED manufacturers put their LED chips on a Metal Core Printed Circuit Board (MC-PCB) and use plastic protective lenses. Sunlite’s AS-LED modules, on the other hand, are manufactured by placing multiple LED chips directly onto an aluminum heat sink and use glass lenses for protection. Sunlite’s AS-LED modules can be threaded into housings made of extruded aluminum to create the final light fixture. The combination of few insulating layers, glass lenses (that do not degrade or turn yellow over time), and a sturdy thread-in design leads to unsurpassed heat dissipation, lighting efficiency, and overall durability.
The lighting industry uses the L70 rating standard as the life span for an LED. L70 is measured in hours until the LED package (not the LED fixture) reaches 70% of its original light output under ideal test conditions. The lifetime of many commercial LED packages (in a well designed LED fixture) is estimated to be around 60,000 hours. This is nearly seven years of continuous operation and is much longer than the life span of incandescent, fluorescent, or HID lamps. The 60,000 hour lifetime estimation does not account for other problems such as yellowing of lenses or driver failure (if there is a built-in driver). Because they have excellent heat dissipation, a remote driver setup, and use an integrated glass lens design (without gaps that allow insects to get inside the lens), Sunlite’s products are designed for a lifetime of over 60,000 hours.
